The Institute for Student Astronomical Research (InStAR) is holding a 1-day conference/reception in San Rafael, CA - all teachers welcome!

InStAR held its first Research Seminar for students in the Spring of 2015. Ten student teams from high schools and community colleges around the country conducted and published original research in the field of Double Star Astronomy. The students got to experience the entire research process, from coming up with a project, writing and re-writing a proposal, conducting the research either with a local astronomer or using remote telescopes, analyzing their findings and writing and submitting a paper for publication!
The Institute is now expanding to include other areas of astronomy research in addition to double stars as well as into the field of Environmental Studies. A pilot program was run out of Concordia University, Irvine in the Spring of 2015, in which students collected local data on particulate matter in the air in several areas around their homes and campuses. They were able to examine the particles under the microscope and further studies will involve spectral analysis of the sub-micrometer particles. Additionally acidity levels in dew were collected and analyzed over time. With the improvements and advanced in technology this kind of research is becoming more accessible to students, as well as more direly needed as the climate change continues.
